It tastes like what it means and that is the essence of fine art. Opus One not only represents the blending of these two glorious wine traditions but speaks eloquently of this merger of two sensibilities, striking a balance between opulent, generous, accessible California fruit and the restrained, steely, elegance and finesse of Bordeaux. Artworks not only represent their subject matter but make statements about them as well. In 1979, it represented the coming of age for Napa wines which could not only compete on the world stage with Bordeaux but enter into an equal partnership with the most storied wine region in the world. But in particular, it’s an iconic wine that succeeded in bringing a European, classical, wine sensibility to the warmer climate and richer soils of Napa. What makes Opus One worthy of mention in a series on the Art of Wine? As you know if you’ve been reading my work on the aesthetics of wine, I think fine wines that are intended to provide a distinctive aesthetic experience are works of art. Why should the wine world be any different? Yes, great wine can be appreciated without the trappings of luxury but some of the connections to a different time and place would be lost without them. If you spend much time exploring the art world, pretention is part of the landscape. The atmosphere invites contemplation which is not true of many winery tasting rooms (or art museums for that matter). We were able to sit quietly and undisturbed for a considerable length of time and think about the wine. pour of their flagship wine the Overture was available for tasting as well.Īll of this is a bit precious and pretentious and is clearly designed to project an image of old world, aristocratic, class and sophistication. The cost without the tour is $50 per glass for a healthy 5 oz. Opus One makes two wines: their flagship Cabernet-based blend and a non-vintage second wine called Overture. The formal young man was slightly more knowledgeable than a moonlighting college student when I asked him questions about the wine, but only slightly. In the contemporary, but understated tasting room, bathed as always in classical music, you walk to the bar where a charming yet formal young man gives you an information packet, explains the very limited options for tasting, and pours your wine which you can then take to a nearby couch served by a coffee table, or weather permitting, to an adjoining courtyard. Upon entering the hushed foyer with classical music playing gently in the background you are greeted by a “concierge”, a charming, yet formal woman whose job it seems is to check your reservation and escort you to the tasting room-in other words a greeter. Mondavi likened it to a space ship, but the central courtyard bounded by colonnades on each side and an interior adorned with limestone mantels and opera chairs is an intriguing amalgam of old and new. The building is a massive, cream-colored, laterally-elongated, modern mansion that seems to grow naturally out of the hill on which it’s perched. Visiting Opus One is indeed like visiting a modern art museum. They made their first vintage in 1979 using the Mondavi facility, moving to their current location in 1991. It began as a partnership of Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Chateau Mouton Rothschild in Pauillac, France, and the renowned Robert Mondavi who helped build Napa winemaking from the ground up-a marriage of French aristocracy and American immigrant grit. I suppose it is then fitting to kick off this inaugural post in a series about the art of wine with a winery that perhaps best represents the celebrity and ostentation of the art world-Opus One. That view of the art world ignores all the local art in communities throughout the world which is accessible and can be enormously satisfying, but such is our fascination with celebrity and money that we think of the art world in those terms. Art has a reputation for being cut off from everyday life, existing in a separate realm of sumptuous galleries, cloistered museums, outrageous prices, and snobbish patrons.

Invisibobble Original Traceless Spiral Hair Ties. And when you own the 3 daily daylight feeding movements, even centered around 40 acres or less, you truly have the potential to be the herd influencer for the entire neighborhood. If you own private land, well positioned food plots that compliment a highly strategic design for your entire parcel, can create the opportunity for you to attract, hold, protect and hunt a deer herd that can rival any other land in the neighborhood. While wilderness and big cover setting timber clearcuts can create significant afternoon food source movements, in particular on large public land tracts, they lack the diversity and size to create pinpoint deer travel on a consistent daily basis for the entire season. However, only a high quality food plot truly has the ability to create the foundation of afternoon food source movement that you can count on to last, all season long. What is a High Quality afternoon food sources? Diverse food plot plantings, hidden corners of multi crop ag fields and even a significant apple orchard can all create afternoon food source movements that range from 6 weeks to several months of the entire hunting season. Simply, you can't attract an afternoon food source movement without the deer herd relating to nearby daytime browse and bedding areas. Just like daytime browse isn't enough to attain your whitetail goals, neither is only attempting to maintain an afternoon-only feeding slot. Creating the afternoon food source movement not only creates outstanding opportunities for you to target the majority of the neighborhood buck herd, but a season-long afternoon movement is the basic requirement for you to able to attract, hold, mold and protect a quality deer herd. Your entire parcel should be built around the foundation of deer moving from daylight bedding areas to afternoon food sources. High Quality Afternoon Food SourcesĮven though deer only feed 1 time each day roughly an hour before dark, this single feeding time is the most important feeding time of the entire hunting season. However, quality browse without a quality afternoon food source can leave you scratching your head, when you fail to consistently hold deer on your land. Deer need to feed on adequate amounts of browse, 2 out 5 times during a 24 hour period within their daylight bedding areas. Hardwood regeneration, woody shrub tips, various broadleaf weeds and briars can combine to create high quality feeding opportunities for attracting deer to adequate daytime bedding opportunities. If you own the best deer browse in the area, you own 2/3rds of the necessary daylight deer feeding puzzle. Aside from wasting precious resources, attracting deer herds at the wrong time of the day, can leave you on the short side of the stick of deer herd and hunting management. Sure, deer need to feed 5 times in a 24 hour period in 3 categories of food types, but that doesn't mean that you have to feed them for all 5 periods of time! While that is difficult to accomplish on one hand, I have experienced that deer choose to be attracted to a chunk of land during two very different portions of a 24 hour clock. Used for horses ,mules, donkeys, cows, goats, sheep, deer, llama, etc.*The Afternoon deer feeding from bedding to high quality food sources, is the foundation of all quality deer herd and hunting management movements.Option to choose the color of the hay feeder.Option send in a custom designed decal that goes on the hay feeder.Fussell Hay Feeder has a top lead to keep hay dry and a animal from reaching over and eating out of the top.A automatic water counter to count the amount of water being used.A automatic waterer on the side of Fussell hanging hay feeder.A front shield to convert to a all grain or pellet feeder. As the guys from Navistar like to point out, the International ProStar was the first real cab off the aerodynamic rank way back in 2007. The reality is however, that all American manufacturers now have a slippery-shaped prime mover for the US long-haul market.įrom the Freightliner Cascadia, Kenworth T680, to the Volvo VN and the newly launched Western Star 5700EX, a streamlined bonnet and cab is now the new face of trucking in the US. The aero look of most new American prime movers is at odds with the flat, portrait style radiator grille and vertical snorkels and stacks that we associate with a big American conventional. The enduring image of American trucking is often a Peterbilt 379 or Kenworth conventional with a towering chrome shrouded snout, but emissions targets are now also mandating fuel economy for Class 8 (heavy-duty) vehicles. The circuit has a mix of highway, and off-road circuits, and like most test facilities it has lots of very interesting bits of gear tucked away to be flogged around the track when nobody is looking. From the baby TerraStar 4×4, the WorkStar vocational hauler to the ProStar highway hauler and of course the range topping LoneStar, International’s king of bling.ĭuring the summer months, Eaton’s 600-acre (243-hectare) facility is pretty much booked solid with manufacturer testing schedules, training days, customer drive days and of course the occasional bunch of blow-in media, like us. But that day at the Eaton test facility located in Marshall, Michigan we were introduced to a cross-section of the International range. It’s probably fair to say I’m easily amused. He even takes some pictures for show and tell. A black International LoneStar glittering in all its retro chrome glory and his reaction is only marginally more mature. Only days earlier in the United States, a bigger kid of the adult variety finds himself standing in front of the real thing. The LoneStar tends to have that sort of effect on people. “Wow, I’m taking this to show and tell!” he squeaks as he scurries out of the room. Inside the box is a scale model of an International LoneStar, the hero of the American International heavy-duty range. He looks up at his old man “Can … can I have it?” Wide-eyed, he says “Is it for me?” Recently in a small town in regional New South Wales, a five-year-old boy stood staring in wonder at the contents of the box that his dad had just given him. Now go eat some jerky.Matt Wood heads stateside to get his hands on a big shiny International LoneStar and satisfies the super trucker within. Jealous of all your chrome and smutty magazines and check shirt the size of a tent. Of course, there’ll be plenty of leather-suited moustache-wearers who will moan that the LoneStar HD drags the good name of Harley-Davidson yet further into the mud (remember the Ford F150 Harley-Davidson ute?) but don’t listen to them. Suffice to say you won’t be challenging that IS-F in an off-the-line drag race, mind. Performance? Well, that’ll depend how many of the aforementioned smutty magazines you’ve loaded into your LoneStar. The LoneStar HD is a special edition of International’s ‘Class 8’ big rig, powered by a 12-litre turbodiesel that puts out a modest 600bhp but – ready for this – almost 2000lb ft of torque, channelled to the road through an 18-speed gearbox, which is one more gear than the Lexus IS-F. Puts the boys’ piteous big-rigs to shame, doesn’t it? Imagine blasting down Route 66 in this, country and western blaring out of the giant speakers, stash of smutty magazines on the seat beside, wearing a check shirt the size of a large tent, mercilessly turning cute roadside mammals into roadkill. Take a look at this, the LoneStar Harley-Davidson Special Edition, a monster, blinged-up semi (which is a category of lorry, we believe) from Navistar International.
